In 1896, psychologist George Stratton decided to experiment with perception. He started wearing mirrored glasses that flipped the world upside down, and after three days his brain flipped the world right side up again, even though he kept wearing the glasses. He took off the glasses and the world was upside down again...for three days. Then it flipped again, and his vision was normal.
My first reaction to this news was intense motion sickness, but then I started thinking. Three days to alter reality. Does this apply to thoughts as well as physical perception? Can it alter how you feel about particular events, or alter your beliefs about particular people?
It would be a lovely thing if we could hand people a pair of metaphorical glasses and give them three days to start seeing a new reality. There could be a pair of glasses to stop violent abusers from acting out...a pair of glasses that erase racial hate...a pair of glasses that make lawmakers understand true justice.
It's time to turn the world upside down, and give it a chance to right itself.
