'We haven't gotten the guidance for that new procedure; could you chase that up?'
'Can you please chase her for a response?'
'I've been chasing up that invoice but had no luck.'
'We'll have to shelve that for now and chase it in the new year.'
Okay, everyone, enough is enough. I am going to sit down right here for a minute and think about this. Why does so much of my day job involve chasing things? I did not sign up to be a long-distance runner. I don't think anyone signs up to be a long-distance runner...except, of course, long-distance runners. For those of us with an office job, we are designed to think. Plan. Create. Type. Write reports. Monitor results. Solve problems. Train staff.
Not chase.
And if I DID want to chase things for a living, I would be chasing very different things. The scent of fresh bread in the air. The sound of waves crashing on the shore. An adorable puppy who wants to play. The 'x' at the end of the treasure map. The perfect word, said at the perfect moment. The freshest doughnut in the bakery. Another hour with those I've loved and lost.
It's time to re-think how the working world is set up.
It's time to stop chasing things we don't want to catch.
