Ordinary Words 2: Sparkle

Sparkling wine.

That sparkle in his eye.

Sparkling jewels.

Leave the fairy lights on 'sparkle'.

We can watch the sparkles of sunshine on the ocean.

She sparkled as Maria in The Sound of Music.

They set off sparklers to celebrate their best friend's wedding.

That girl was made to sparkle.

'Sparkle' is my favourite ordinary word, because (as the examples above show) it can mean so many things.  At its most basic, it means 'to shine brightly with small points of light', but the beautiful thing is that the light can be literal or metaphorical.  Witty, vivacious people 'sparkle', especially when their wit sheds lights on others.  Brave, determined people 'sparkle' as they fight for their dreams.

In these difficult political times, we need to hold on to our sparkle.  Be witty, be brave, be strong.  Light up the darkness, and the darkness will not be able to stand before it.
