A Few of My Favourite Things

  • Figuring out complex grammatical structures with my fellow language nerd.
  • Laughing helplessly at the piles of slippery snow as my sister and I shovel the driveway.
  • Marathon baking sessions with my mom, where flour ends up everywhere.
  • Punny conversations with my little brother.
  • Book talk and Disney movies with my sisters-in-law.
  • Making scallops with my brother after watching Hell's Kitchen, because 'it can't be that hard!'
  • Talking about making haggis in a sock with my little goddaughter.
  • Listening to the theme song of Downton Abbey as my friends and I drive to Highclere Castle.
  • Walking on the beach with a dear friend.
  • Planning the menu for dinner parties.
  • Watching my nephews and niece perform in a play they wrote themselves.
  • Dinners at del Rio's with people who made me laugh and learn and ponder.

These are a few of my favourite things, and all came to mind tonight as I wrote the dedication for my first novel.  It is amazing how much lies behind the few simple words that will actually end up on the page.  Years of giggling fits and bouts of tears, hard work and lazy days, long talks and quick chats.

This world might be in quite a state, but some things are still wonderful.
